i am pursuing btech in cse.either i want to do mtech in cs or ms in qe from isi.so can you suggest me which 1 is better for me and what shall i do for preparation??
@Paras: I have no clue about Mtech in CS. And comparing Mtech in CS and QE from ISI is like comparing apples and ladyfinger! All depends on your interest.
Hi I have done my Bsc in Math, I am right working in a IT Company for three years, along with that I have done MS from BITS pilani which is a Work integrated programme, But I am vry much interested in Economics, basically in mathematical economics.

@Priyanka: 12th class Economics is not at all sufficient for the entrance.
Hi Riju,
I am pursuing an Integrated M. Sc. course in Economics and I am about to finish my third year. I was seeking some information about the M Phil-PhD entrance exam conducted by DSE.
1. The indicative books mentioned in the Hand book( Jhele – Reny for micro, Romer for macro) are sufficient or not? If you have some alternatives in mind(especially for macro) then please mention
2. What is the basic outline of the interview? do they ask economics funda or they ask about the broad research topic you have in mind?
also kindly tell about the level of questions asked in the exam.
Please see the past year papers for references. The kind of questions asked in M.Phil-PhD entrance involve advanced concepts.

Hi Riju, was trying to look for the information about this year’s entrance test for MA Eco -DSE.
The official page still goes to the 2010 details. Looking at that I can infer that the forms open up in
@Vaibhav: Its there on the website.
…. Sorry for the half comment there, So it can be inferred that forms open up in May, but there is no information about this year’s test as if yet. Cannot find anything else anywhere. Can you please help with some info about it.
Hi,
I’m an undergraduate student of Economics from Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata. I was wondering how the entrance preparation should be organised, and around what time I should start (I’m currently at the end of my first year). Also, could you suggest where it is possible to be coached specially for the entrances? I found out about an organisation called Ecopoint that provides online tutorials(link attached) and seems pretty comprehensive in their approach and the topics they cover, but I’m not sure how reliable or helpful an online distance coaching course would be. Could you kindly tell me if you’ve heard of Ecopoint, and if you would recommend it?
http://www.ecopoint.in/
Thanks a lot.
You may try the coaching. I do not wish to comment on any coaching institute.
You may try it and evaluate it yourself. I do not wish to comment on any coaching institutes.
Hi,
I’m an undergraduate student of Economics from Kolkata. I was just wondering how I should start preparing for the entrances, and around what time (I’m currently at the end of my first year). Also, would you recommend the online courses of Ecopoint? They seem to be comprehensive but I’m a little apprehensive about distant coaching. Please let me know.
Hey Riju!
First of all let me congratulate you on the amazing work you are doing.. Simply awesome..

All your questions have already been answered in the blog (and the comments). Please read them.
thanks for such an informative website…i have a doubt in the difference in the two year courses offered at DSE [MA(h)] and ISI [MSQE]. i have got selected in both and now not able to decide between the two.
Tell me about the course, kind of job opportunities, research opportunities and everything so that i could make an informed decision. i also request you to reply as soon as possible since admissions are due next week.
I think you would have decided ur course by now. The query has already been answered in the previous comments.
hi, i just got through to dse. Was wondering if it would be possible for you to briefly describe a typical day at d-school? thanks
I think you would have got to know about it by now!
ma’am i am doing eco (H) from du and am currently in 2nd year. after my graduation i have decided to try for ias with eco as an optional subject.so will my preparation for dse be in line with my preparation for ias??
Both do not go together. IAS prep is off the track with DSE course.
Hi,
Im doin my graduation with eco and maths from Du, My chapters in both the subjects are same as that of honours except mathematical and statistical economics also i have analysis and statistics in maths i want to give the entrance of dse pls can you tell that whether i must focus on da topics which ive studied or go for buying books of hons………pls help.
So are you doing BA prog? Please refer to the books suggested in the blog.
Yes im doing BA prog can you tell how hard it would be for me to crack DSE. Although Im academically good as well as hardworking jus messed up my 12th percent which was 81% science stream.I really want to get admission in DSE can you tell me of any person who cleared entrance and was not from eco hons or maths hons.
There are many. There is no formula (yet!!) to clear the entrance.
Please refer to the books I suggested in the blog.
Hi,
I am Ankit, have done MBA from Mumbai University into finance. I have done Bachelor of Mgmt. Studies from Mumbai University.
I wish to do something into research part.
I wish to pursue a degree mostly into Quantitative Finance or economics or altogether a different degree like Msc. Statistics.
Currently I am working as Propreitory Trader into Commodities in a private firm in mumbai.
the degree i want to pursue is different from my job profile so Workshops wouldnot help.
I would want to learn advanced Statistics like GARCH model, Granger test, Cointegration, etc. that would help me to do some kind of research into Capital markets.
So the basic crux of this message is I want an advise from you as of from where exactly shall I began my search for the same.
I have enquired few institutes like-
Indian Statistical Institute and IIT kanpur.
They are offering MSc in Stats, but am afraid as they require a BSc degree for pursuing MSc in Stats which unfortunately I dont have.
Shall I pursue Doctoral or Master’s degree and that to from where and in which field.
Waiting for reply. Please help me out as i am totally confused..
Apart from ISI (MSc QE) there is no course in Economics that will train you for capital markets. I am sorry, I can’t help beyond that. You must look for courses in Finance than Economics.
Hey Riju,
Im pursuing B.Sc. (Hons) Physics from St. Stephen’s College and i wish to do MA Economics from DSE. I read through your article and realised its going to be a real task for me cracking the entrance since i have no prior background of economics. I’m in my 3rd year which means I’m left with less than a year now for preparation. How do you think I should go about it?
@Hema: There is no shortcut for preparation. Please refer to the blog. One year is sufficient to prepare if you study hard.
Hi Riju,
I have done B.tech from IIT Delhi and is currently working in a management strategy consultancy. I am also writing CFA level 1 in December and hoping to write CFA level 2 in June next year. I want to do phd in economic policy later some time at some global best school like LSE or Harvard, so I am considering to go for masters in economics presently. I am considering some of the colleges in India for that and as per my research, ISI appears to qualify the requirements. Can you please suggest on my decision for ISI, or if you can suggest some other school in India, or does it make any sense going for a school in India.
Thanks & Regards
Ankit
Both DSE and ISI are good for you. ISI is a bit more technical and has limited exposure to development field.
Hey! I am from Chennai doing B.com final yr…i had economics as an allied subject last yr n found it really intreastg so i would like 2 do my pg in d same stream…i knw delfi school of economics is the ideal place for dat but i have no clue abt the entranc…being a commerc grad, i hav a very light knowledg in economics n absolutely nil in math! But i have a confidenc dat i wil crak the subject wid very good score if i geat seat there…could you please guide me in preparing for the entranc?? I have no idea and helpless
Absolutely nil knowledge about mathematics is problematic! Please see the last year papers on dse website and see if you can manage minimum 40% of the questions.
Hi Riju,
The blog is great and very informative. Thank you very much for that. I am a B.Tech graduate from NIT Kurukshetra and presently working in IBM. I am very much interested in pursuing MA in Economics from but I have a strange problem here. I have my GPA 6.4 in electrical engineering. Am I eligible for DSE entrance? I mean they said the a minimum of 60% is required as eligibility but my college states 9 as the multiplying factor for conversion. Do they have any specific criterion for converting CGPA into percentage. I have put lot of hopes in pursuing MA eco from DSE and suddenly I feel very disheartened. Please clarify. Thanks in advance.
I am not aware of this and perhaps you should call up DSE office to clarify.
Hey Riju,
Its a wonderful work you’ve done on the blog. It helped me a lot preparing for my entrances. I am targeting ISI this year. The kind of questions they ask are much based upon economic applications. Am already doing the workbook and MIT opencourseware questions as suggested, but still don’t feel much confidence. I would be glad if you could suggest me a book which targets economic applications, as it is asked in the ISI entrance.
MIT OCW has lot of application based questions. You must go through ALL the relevant courses on OCW website. And google, there are quite a many US univ which put up their course material on web.
Hello Riju,
For a newbie to econ, this website is indeed a wealth of information. Thanks for that. I’m a Computer science engineer and am quite keen on pursuing my interest in Economics, specifically, behavioral econ/game theory. I’ve applied to a few universities abroad, but I was also interested in the MQE program offered at ISI. I have pretty much little information about the syllabus for the test (you have mentioned the books, but then, Pindyck Rubenfield is 700 pages!!). Is there a defined syllabus? Are there centres that administer mock tests in Bangalore? Is the Math CAT level? Are there any other programs you could recommend for me which would help me get to a top PhD program in the States on completion?
Many thanks!
1. Pick up the syllabus for ISI and map what you should study. There is no fixed syllabus like CBSE board exams! I am not aware of any mock tests in Bangalore. Do past years, that should suffice.
2. DSE is a good option as well but ISI would be best suited.
Hi Riju
I ma Abhilasha. I am pursuing B.A Economics Hons. from Miranda house.I ma currently in final year.Really like your blog
very interesting! I wanted to talk to about our Annual Economics Festival ‘Zenith 2012′.We are organizing an event “Be an Economist” in collaboration with IIT-D.It is on the 11th February. The event basically deals with giving certain crisis situations to the participants. The participants are supposed to give certain feasible short-term and long-term solutions to the same.It would be great if you join us for the same as a Judge. It would be great if you send me your e-mail id or phone number to discuss the same. Thanks
Thanks Abhilasha. This sounds fun. I have sent you my number on your gmail account.
Hi Riju,
I have done BBA and have been working for 3 years. Is it wise for me to start preparing for DSE MA Eco now ? Also, I think I can cover Chiang, Fischer and Varian in remaining time. Will that be enough for DSE 2012 ?
Really need your help and guidance here!!
Thanks!!
It is for you to decide. See the question papers and the syllabus for the entrance.
Hey..didnt notice before that its your madhubani here
I am not sure if I am correct though..couldnt find the double boundaries
Hey Riju Bafna, i am student hailing from Kerala and am confused to select a college for the BA level.I would like to contact u on phone or email. Can u provide your contact details to me please?
You can discuss here.
Thanks a lot for providing so much information.
I have one favor to ask of you.
I am from hyderabad and i see that u mentioned previous papers are available in xerox shop in DSE.
If you by any chance have the previous papers can you pls upload them on the site or email it to me.
If not please let me know if there is any other way to procure them.

Check this website: http://www.alexmthomas.com/ma-economics/
hi riju
I’m saloni, swati paliwal’s sister……not sure if u remember her(u were together in school)
It was nice to see your website…..
I’m doing an undergraduate course called Bachelor in Management Studies in Mumbai (Its sort of like an undergraduate level MBA). The syllabus is obviously very different from DU’s Eco Honors and there isnt a coaching centre catering to M.A Eco here.Do you think I would stand a chance if I applied for Delhi School of Economics studying on my own?
Could you also give me some information about the syllabus of the RBI’s Young Scholar Award? (Its not there on the website)
Thanks
Hey! I obviously remember Swati! Well, you have to be thorough with DU econ syllabus for DSE. Pick up the syllabus and do it on your own. Coaching etc. is not of too much help.
RBI Young Scholar syllabus is very much on the website: http://rbi.org.in/scripts/YoungScholarSyllabus12.aspx
